Newest (Oldest) Coaches in the WAC
Welcome to the Western Athletic Conference UT-San Antonio and Texas State. Which means welcome
back to football for head coaches Larry Coker and Dennis Francione.
Coker coached Miami from 2001-2006 and led the Hurricanes to the 2001 National Championship and lost the 2002 championship. He led Miami from the Big East into the ACC in 2004. He was fired after the 2006 season, in which Miami went 6-6.
Coker has now resurfaced as the first head coach for UTSA. The Roadrunners went 4-6 in their inaugural season as an FCS independent team. They join the WAC in 2012 before entering Conference USA in 2013. Coker is an experienced coach and the Roadrunners have a solid stadium, playing in the Alamodome.
While UTSA just began playing football in 2011, Texas State has been playing since 1904. The program has two national championships and 14 conference championships
Dennis Franchione took over Texas State in 2011, the Bobcats went 6-6 last season in their final FCS season. They finally join the FBS and the WAC in 2012 with an experienced coach and a renovated stadium that can now hold 30,000 fans.
Franchione has an overall career record of 193–107–2 and 4-3 in bowls. Franchione has coached at New Mexico, TCU, Alabama, and Texas A&M. Franchione departed TCU, Alabama, and Texas A&M all in controversial ways.
Franchione (61) and Coker (64) are two old veterans who have been around the game a long time. Coker is on only his second head coaching job while Francione is on his 7th total (also including Pittsburg State and Southwest Texas State). These two old veterans will look to bring new programs to life. In Coker's case he is literally building a program from nothing. In Franchione's case, he is welcoming a team with some proud history, to experience new history in FBS football.
Both men have really nothing to lose and everything to gain. Welcome to the FBS and the WAC UTSA and Texas State. And welcome back Larry Coker and Dennis Franchione.
